Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850’s system has always been a promising concept. EcoTank equipment is not an expensive, wasteful cartridge, but a large tank filled with a lot of ink, and the cost of printing is only a fraction of the previous level. It’s a good idea, but we’re frustrated that we haven’t seen it fit for a particularly good printer or multifunction peripheral (MFP). It is clear that Epson has improved the EcoTank system itself. This MFP ink cartridge is neatly integrated into the front so you can see their level at a glance – it’s important not to let them dry. What’s more, Epson overhauled the filling system and introduced keying to eliminate the risk of mis-refueling. The new Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850 system looks more leak-proof and splash-proof: now you only need to insert a bottle into the water tank and place it for a minute to release. The ink compartment has an increased capacity (500 sheets can be printed), faster, more cycle-compliant, 5GHz-enabled wireless connectivity, and printing (non-Pro models only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi). In terms of consumables (Epson DuraBrite pigment ink), a bottle of black ink is labeled with 7,500 pages printed, while green, yellow, and thick inks are labeled 6,000 pages. it seems that the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850 is cursed by a slow scanner. At 150 or 300 points per inch (dpi), the A4 scan takes 28 seconds – at least twice as much as we expected. The 1,200dpi postcard photo scan takes nearly two minutes. Suspecting that the network interface is slow, we repeat the test via USB, but for almost the same time. At least the results are very good, the quality is very good.
